econ class to create business plan

Students of teacher Timothy McEvilly’s first hour Economics class met Sept. 9 with Dave Surico -- owner of Chicagoland Soccer, a website dedicated to reporting on high school soccer in the Chicago area -- to create a business plan to keep the venture and high school soccer boys soccer coverage alive and well.
Chicagoland Soccer's origins started with Premium Preps, an internet business Surico started in 2008. Colleague Gary Larsen began Chicagoland Soccer a year later. When Larsen ceased publication after the 2013 season, Surico decided to take up the reins once again in order to keep the site alive.
The goal of the collaboration is create enough revenue to keep the website in business for many years to come.
“I think it can work,” Surico said during his presentation. “The possibility is there. I need young and eager minds to help me figure it out.”
The project, which was conceived by McEvilly, will benefit the students as well as the website.
“I would like my students to start visualizing how people can make money off of internet-based businesses,” said McEvilly, who coaches the boys and girls varsity teams at Wheaton North. “I think a lot of them might be involved in those types of ventures later in their own lives.
“My overall hope is that the [students] will open up avenues that [Surico] has not thought about, as far as revenue streams for him to find a way to make his business have a greater chance of longevity.”
Brenden McQuitter, a senior in McEvilly’s class, commented on the learning opportunities, saying that the students will be able to “see which of [their] ideas will be accepted and actually work,” giving them valuable insight into real-world business’ needs.
The student groups will present their ideas to Surico, McEvilly, and a third party of judges this December. Chicagoland Soccer will consider implementing the most promising plan for the company’s financial future. The group of students that produced it will have a story featuring them and their plan published on the website.
