13 Chicagoland Soccer teams
set to battle in PepsiCo Showdown
Lyons (No. 3) gets top-CS seed
in 34-team tournament, Morton #1 overall
By Dave Surico
Lyons had undefeated St. Charles East, regarded as the No.1 team in Illinois, on the ropes in the New Trier Tournament final last weekend before falling on 79th- and 82nd-minute goals.
Presumably-based in part on that effort, the Lions (5-2) were given the No. 3 seed in the 34-team PepsiCo Showdown field, which was announced Monday night on the tournament's Twitter and Facebook accounts. The first full-day of tournament action starts Saturday at the Lions soccer complex in LaGrange.
The argument can be made that Lyons could have been placed above New Trier, which St. Charles East defeated 4-2 to advance to the North Shore-school's tournament title game. Either way, the schools would still meet if they follow their seeds to the semifinals.
The Lions have gained the most finals in the 10-year history of the Pepsi tournament with four appearances. They took the crown in 2012 over Morton, the 2014 No. 1 seed which finished second the past two tournaments.
Wheaton Academy (4-0) was named the tournament's fourth seed. The Warriors finished fourth in the Class AA state tournament last season.
St. Charles North (No. 6, 4-2-1), Metea Valley (No. 10, 4-1-0), West Chicago (No. 11, 2-1-1), Streamwood (No. 12, 4-1-1) and Oak Park and River Forest (No. 13, 2-2-1) round out the seeded Chicagoland Soccer teams.
The unseeded Chicagoland Soccer squads are (in tournament-listed order): Saint Viator (2-2-1); 3-time Pepsi champ Wheaton Warrenville South (2-2-1), Plainfield Central (2-1-1), Leyden (2-1-1), Wheaton North (3-2-1) and Huntley (1-4-1).
Other seeded teams include: Libertyville (No. 5), defending tournament champ Lane Tech (No. 7), Larkin (No. 8): Lake Zurich (No. 9); defending Class AA champion Washington (No. 14), Maine West (No. 15) and Kelly round out the 16-seeded teams.
The remaining unseeded teams are: Fenwick, Plainfield East, Deerfield, Glenbrook North, East Aurora, Downers Grove North, Niles West, Oswego, Whitney Young, Lockport, Minooka and Solorio.
