Barrington expects to recover
from Homecoming loss to Vikings
By Mike Garofola
BARRINGTON -- Both Ben Borst and Tomas Peleckas didn't shy away their responses when reminded of the effort Fremd gave one week ago at Schaumburg during a 1-0 defeat.
"We were awful," echoed two of the top Vikings on the 2014 roster.
"We could not have been worse that day," said the senior backline star, Peleckas. "But the great thing about this team is our depth. There isn't a drop off when (coach Steve) Keller brings in other guys. That's why, I think, we were able to get ourselves back to where we needed to be this week, and on top of our division."
The Vikings' 3-1 victory Saturday in Barrington spoiled the Broncos' Homecoming plans and culminated an important week for Keller's club. Fremd (8-5-1, 5-1-1) was in the thick of things last year until Barrington used a 2-1 victory to all but clinch the MSL West, and a spot in the MSL Cup.
"We're a long way from getting to where we wanted to be, but this was a game we needed after drawing with Hersey (1-1) last (Friday) night, and not grabbing those three points that were out there," offered Keller.
Peleckas' point about the team's depth was illustrated in the performances of several Vikings who came on for their fellow mates throughout a fall Saturday afternoon, that became increasingly warmer.
Junior Rohan Menon, back from a stay in club last season, provided plenty of energy and inspiration while in the middle of the park for Keller, as did Seiya Iguchi, whose pace on the outside gave the Vikings attack a spark.
Another junior, Michael Guedel, earned an assist on the final Fremd goal by Luke Schoffstall, which came in the 71st minute.
"We came to play today, but we'll have to continue to do so from here on out," added Borst.
The Vikings hope to take advantage of two clubs at the bottom end of the table, Prospect and Elk Grove, this week. Meanwhile the Broncos challenge continues with Rolling Meadows on Tuesday at home, followed by Palatine on the road Thursday.
Broncos ready to rebound
Prior to the Fremd defeat, which ended a six-game win streak, the Broncos (11-5, 4-2) enjoyed a wonderful week of soccer success. It began with a sweep of three opponents at the Freeport Tournament, where the Broncos broke out of their goal-scoring slump with 16 goals during the two-day event.
"We started to come out of (it) with our 5-1 win at Prospect, and it continued on through last weekend to give us a boost in our confidence in all areas," said manager Scott Steib.
"The trip to Freeport did a lot of positive things for us aside from winning the tournament -- most importantly, a trip away together -- which helps form a nice brotherhood bond, which goes a long way in the development of your team.
"It also helped us prepare for a big week in the MSL, despite the loss today.
"We went out on Tuesday and beat a pretty good side from Wheeling, which gave us two of our three losses last year, the second coming in the supersectional. Then we followed up with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Schaumburg, which was leading our division.
"So, again, I felt that tournament did us a lot of good. We just have to get back after it in training on Monday."
Austin Grzebieniak and Peyton Mohr added to their scoring totals in Freeport to make the duo the Broncos leading goal scorers thus far with eight apiece.
Casey Slingo put three more assists in the scorebook to build his team-high number to 11. For good measure he bagged the game-winning goal in the Broncos 2-1 overtime victory against Wheeling.
"Those were big wins for us this past week, and although we dropped an important one today, we'll be better next time out after a little rest, and some work at training before Tuesday's game against Rolling Meadows," suggested senior Tyler Anderson, who wears the captain's armband proudly for Steib.
