Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
Blink and it feels as though you just missed half the season.
The eight-week regular season has a propulsive flow and downward momentum that rarely lets up.
The Class A state tournament play-in games began Oct. 7. It starts in full swing this week.
Welcome to the penultimate edition of the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 – a reminder that next week features an examination of the best sectionals in the classes.
All the polls (Top 25, Illinois 10, Class A Super 7, Class AA Super 7) go dark during the state tournament.
The Final 50 collates all the polls following the conclusion of the Class AA and 3A state tournaments.
Two centerpieces of the end of the regular-season — the Public League city championship and the MSL Soccer Bowl — are now in the the spotlight.
Some teams are resting up, and gearing up for the state tournament.
With the sectional seeds posted last week, the end of the regular-season has different implications. Some coaches just like to see where things stand and get a feel for their team and mentality.
Others just want their players sharp and ready to go. State tournament soccer is different, more defensive, less scoring, the stakes exponentially higher the deeper you go.
Four area teams are still undefeated—no. 1 Elgin, no. 2 York, no. 5 Romeoville and no. 6 Stevenson.
Out of that group, Romeoville has accumulated the most wins (21) and the fewest ties (1). The Spartans’ 1-0 victory over Plainfield North Tuesday took the title in the very strong Southwest Prairie Conference.
In a riveting close-out game of the regular season, Romeoville plays No. 3 Naperville Central on Thursday.
Enjoy the last week of the regular season. A weird, unpredictable and transfixing season is getting to the truly wondrous part.
