Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
Rankings are great conversation starters. The placement of teams lends itself to discussions about level and depth of competition, and quality of play. However the state tournament tends to be the leveler.
A single game is not meant to represent a season, but the state tournament games involve the greatest stakes: win and move one-step closer to the ultimate prize; or fall and see your high school season end.
The Class A state tournament enters the sectional phase.
The large schools got their start Friday.
The Class A, AA and 3A tournaments have unfortunately been adversely affected due to the Chicago Teachers Union Strike, which remains unresolved as of Sunday night, Oct. 20.
Top-seeded Class A competitor Marine Leadership was forced to forfeit its regional title game Friday night because of the action.
If the strike is not settled by Monday (Oct. 21), the biggest casualties for the big school tournaments on paper will be top Class AA sectional seeds Senn and 2017 state champion Solorio, which was considered a major contender for the 2019 crown.
Washington will also lose its chance to compete in the medium-sized school bracket. The Patriots won the 2013 state title and finished fourth in 2015.
City champion Lane was getting ready to host a regional as part of the loaded Glenbrook South sectional. St. Patrick and Maine South may advance to the final without playing a game if things don't change. At Lyons, eight of the 18 teams in the Lions sectional are Chicago Public League teams.
The strike has already impacted the state tournament with multiple forfeits in quartefinal round games Friday and Saturday.
It clouds a season that has always been on the cutting edge.
This is the last Top 25 of the season. The next poll in Chicagoland Soccer will be the Final 50 which lists all state teams in a single ranking. It will be published after the Class AA and Class 3A state tournaments conclude.
As a way to gauge the strength and offer a preview of the sectionals, the comments indicate the seeds of the Top 25 teams. Unless indicated, the seeds refer to the Class 3A state tournament participants.
