Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
Get ready for the most exhilarating week of the year. The state tournament is going to have difficulties matching the quality of competition, intensity of play and level of excellence.
This week is quite frankly ridiculous. The Chicago Public League plays its last week of competition before the start of its city tournament. Lane currently is the team to beat, but must play Payton and rival Young. Jones is also in the mix.
Two of the last untied and unbeaten top 10 programs, Batavia and Geneva, meet on Tuesday. The size of the crowd could approach that of a football game.
The state’s top tournament, the Naperville Invitational, plays out this week with its intense three-day conclusion. How great is this year’s field? All eight quarterfinalists are ranked: 1, Naperville North; 2, Barrington; 3, New Trier; 5, Neuqua Valley; 6, Geneva; 9, Fremd; 12, St. Charles East; and 25, Naperville Central.
For a prelude, Neuqua Valley and Naperville North play their conference game on Tuesday. They could play twice in three days this week.
Imagine the possibilities and revel in the excitement.
