Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
A new month and already teams are rejuvenated and ready to get back in the thick of the action.
This week’s edition is largely unchanged. The big movement came from Oswego East, who used a big week to move up to no. 11 from its previous slot at no. 19.
The defining action was a dominant 4-0 victory over then no. 24-ranked Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils have been very good this year.
Oswego East has won four games in a row since a 1-0 loss against no. 3 Naperville Central in its opening game on the second night of the season.
The Wolves posted their first perfect regular season in school history last year before falling to Neuqua Valley in a regional championship.
Over the past week, a lot of other programs were on break or coming off their breaks, so there was a limited slate.
Monday is a monster day in the Premier Division, the top league of the Chicago Public League.
The top four historic programs match up, with Lane at Jones and Young at Payton.
Then, Lane plays at Young on Wednesday.
The DuPage Valley Conference has three teams in the top 11, and those powers will inevitably start to collide.
Unbeaten Carmel gets its biggest test of the year when the Corsairs host Benet on Wednesday in one of the biggest games on the East Suburban Catholic Conference schedule.
New Trier drops out of the top 10 after a tougher than expected weekend on the Illinois side of the St. Louis suburbs. The Trevians fell to Class A Columbia and came from behind to top Belleville West.
The larger point is that leagues slates are starting on a bigger scale and matchups are heating up. That will give us greatest clarity and a sense of how the season might play out.
Saturday starts pool play in the 4th annual Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Classic, where nine-of-the-12 teams are ranked.
The Plainfield Classic and Body Armor Series have large fields and start play Saturday.
More games equals more excitement.
