Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
Emily Fox is a young star on the rise as a high-scoring midfielder at Deerfield.
The sophomore has a tidy average, scoring 18 goals in as many games for the Warriors. If Oswego East was the incumbent team of the week, Deerfield grabbed the crown.
The Warriors went 5-0-0 during the week, posting five shutouts and lighting up the scoreboard.
The question next turns to what the Warriors have to focus on in May with the end of the regular-season clearly in view.
“Obviously what we have been doing has been working,” Fox said. “We have to keep doing what we are doing, and not give up.
“We have to continue to believe in ourselves and believe in each other.”
A consequential week ends with some significant moments.
Naperville North ascends to the top spot following its sharp and dramatic double overtime 2-1 victory over Barrington in the championship game of the Naperville Invitational Saturday.
Those two teams opened the season against each other with North prevailing 2-0. They played in the 2019 Class 3A state championship with the Huskies taking a shootout.
They played three times in 2018 as well. The first game was a draw, North won the semifinal game in the Invitational, and Barrington won the state semifinal en route to its second-consecutive state championship.
Deerfield is a riser. Naperville North, like Barrington, is perennial. The goal is clear where teams want to be.
With the state tournament schedule now known, the road map has been drawn for the race to the finish line.
