Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
The countdown begins.
In the final week of the regular season, teams are starting to lock in and prepare, mentally and physically, for the start of the state tournament race.
Next week features a final regular season poll and then comes a break until the season ends when the Final 50 state poll combines the Top 25 and best of the out-of-area programs that are eligible for the Illinois 10.
This time of year is exhilarating for the fans and nerve-wracking for the players and coaches.
This is also the equivalent of conference championship week. The Chicago Public League decides the city champion with its final four of no. 17 Lane, defending city finalist Jones, surging Payton and Young, the constant who has qualified for the city semifinals for the 20th-consecutive year.
The Indians, who are three-time defending city champions, are the favorites, but anything is possible.
Barrington seeks its seventh-consecutive Mid-Suburban League Soccer Bowl crown. Conant stunned the Fillies 2-1 on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from taking the conference with 32 points to the Cougars’ 30.
The MSL East is still up for grabs and will be decided by Elk Grove’s remake with Schaumburg and Prospect’s make-up home date with Hersey, both on Monday. Elk Grove and Hersey are tied with 19 points.
Other highlights include the Tri-Cities Night matchups with Geneva and no. 22 St. Charles East and top-ranked St. Charles North and no. 16 Batavia.
