Chicagoland Soccer Top 25
By Patrick Z. McGavin
Does anybody want to be no. 1? Or rather, can anyone hold on to the top spot?
Those seem fair questions after previously top-ranked Lyons lost a 1-0 battle against Conant on Sunday in a BodyArmor bracket.
Second-ranked Oak Park and River Forest, suffered its second loss of the week after losing on penalty kicks against Naperville Central.
There’s the rub.
Morton was the next in line. The Mustangs have a phenomenal history and culture of dominance.
They lost to Naperville Central, and only have one upper echelon victory to their credit, a 1-0 decision no. 4 Naperville North on August 27.
Seo, effectively a West Suburban Conference Silver Division team is replacing another at the top of the order.
Same as it ever was.
Defending Class 3A state champion York climbs to the top spot, vaulting from its previous perch at no. 7.
Only a 2-2 tie with previously ranked Lake Park prevents a perfect start for the Dukes, who beat Oak Park and River Forest 2-1 on Tuesday.
York has posted a dominant scoring-differential (34-6).
Conant is the other big riser, showing its championship victory over host Barrington in its own tournament was no fluke.
Grayslake Central knocked off previously undefeated Warren 2-0.
“I thought Grayslake Central was just as advertised,” Warren coach Jason Ahonen said after the game. “Dynamic and quick up-top, very mature in the middle and skilled all around.”
What is clear, is that there are multiple teams bunched at the top. The sorting remains ongoing.
The Dukes are no. 1, for now.
