Scissor kicks, and cuts, planned
for OPRF-Fenwick crosstown game
By Matt Le Cren
Oak Park and River Forest players have made a tradition out of shaving their heads for the annual game against crosstown rival Fenwick.
The Huskies have added a new wrinkle this year and a local charity will be the beneficiary.
The players have organized a fundraising event called Klipz 4 Kidz to raise money for Kidz Express, a non-profit organizing centered in the Austin community.
“It provides comprehensive solutions to urban challenges present in South Austin by building community support, strengthening family economic security and fostering positive youth development,” OPRF coach Paul Wright said in a press release.
The Huskies have been selling raffle tickets for $1 each or three for $2 during school this week. The winners will be able to cut the players’ hair in the style of their choosing in the driveway outside the school at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and the Huskies will take on the Friars at 6 p.m. Friday at Oak Park Stadium with their new dos.
Eighteen players have volunteered to allow their hair to be cut.
“My captains and managers came up with the idea to shave our heads and get some funny haircuts as a charity event,” Wright said. “Cuyler Dull picked the charity. He talked about it to the team, and they decided on it as a whole.”
Wright liked the idea and the captains – Dull, Will Dunne and Evan Kindler – then got it approved by the school administration.
“We have always done it as a team bonding thing the past eight years,” Wright said. “Almost every player participates unless they have senior photos still (to take) or another family event coming up.
“Eighteen players are offering their heads to the entire student body. If your name is pulled you get be a barber and design the haircut.”
The Huskies (6-4-1, 2-0-0) are riding a three-game win streak entering into the Fenwick game, with victories over West Suburban Conference Silver Division foes Glenbard West and Downers Grove North and nonconference for Ridgewoood. Kindler has led the way and has tallied eight of the team’s 17 goals. Wright said Max Klevgard has also been a key contributor.
Fenwick (3-5-0) took perennial power Morton to overtime before losing 2-1 on Sunday at DePaul University.
“This is a game that is hard to prepare for,” Wright said. “Both teams will have to play their best game and adrenaline will be high. They have always countered well in the middle third of the field and have beat us on some set plays in years past.”
