Wheaton Academy rested
and ready for conference test
Warriors hope to host Glenbard South on Thursday

Wheaton Academy was able to enjoy some time off, going 12 days without playing before returning to action in a 4-0 win versus St. Edward in its Metro Suburban Conference opener Tuesday.
“Everyone is healthy, and that’s the big thing,” Warriors coach Dave Underwood said. “(Tuesday night) was the first night we’d played since Wheaton Warrenville South (a 2-1 loss on March 25), because of our spring break.
"We tried a couple years ago to do stuff over spring break, so we came back and had a couple practices at the end of the break, and we had a good one on Monday and got a good result (against St. Edward)."
Freshman Erin Teevans gave the Warriors all the offense they needed against St. Edward, sending in a cross from Jamie Netzley in the 13th minute.
“St. Ed’s is not the same team that they probably were last year. They graduated a lot of goal scorers,” Underwood said. “I was really happy with how we possessed. We knocked the ball around really well. We were a little rusty, only up 1-0, but then we scored three goals in the second half.”
Anna Joy Setran, Molly Thorson and Teevans tallied goals in the second half. Teevans continues to show that she’s one of the best freshmen in the state -- she's scored seven goals.
“We probably could’ve scored a few more, but their goalie made a good game of it,” Underwood said.
Sophomore Emmerson Fuller was sidelined with illness earlier this season, but has made her way back, while senior Anna Lindus is contributing significantly defensively. Look for both players to step up against Glenbard South.
“One thing I know for sure about Glenbard South is they’re well coached and they will certainly try to play the right away,” Underwood said.
“We expect to see a good game. It’s a conference game for us, and I’m not sure if we had a whole lot of established rivalries, but I’d expect Glenbard South would be near the top of the conference. So I think this will start a little rivalry game for us so the girls are excited for it.”
The Raiders (1-3-1) haven’t played since a 6-0 win against Hampshire on March 27. They were supposed to face Plainfield North on Monday but that game had to be postponed because Plainfield North needed to reschedule a conference game.
“We’re basically an inexperienced team in terms of varsity years represented in the team,” Glenbard South coach Glen Eggert said “We lost a lot of significant players from last year’s team. If we can put it together, and these kids can get in touch with the notion of playing hard for each other, they should be able to compete, but if they don’t get that cohesiveness, they’ll struggle.”
The Raiders topped the Warriors in the playoffs a couple of years ago, so a rivalry of sorts is somewhat in place.
“It depends a lot on the cycle of incoming players and the stream of talent,” Eggert said. “(Wheaton) Academy is usually a stronger team so we’re typically the underdog in this match, but we did beat them in the postseason a couple years ago so it sets the table for this year.”
The forecast for Thursday is calling for unseasonably warm temps in the mid 70s, but showers and thunderstorms as well, possibly strong ones in the afternoon.
“We don’t mention any of that to them (the players),” Underwood said. “We practice and prepare to be playing. There’s the old adage in Chicagoland about if you don’t like the weather then wait 10 minutes because it will be different.”
Regardless if Thursday’s game happens or not, the game ultimately will need to be played as it’ll likely factor in to the conference race.
“We won’t talk about the weather unless it’s going to be an issue,” Undewood said. “If it’s wet, cold and windy we may talk about that with the scouting report. We’re hoping for the best. The weather is forecasting rain but hopefully it’ll hold off.”
For now both teams will do what they can to be ready.
