Geneva to celebrate Senior Night
Vikings host Rosary after tough loss to no. 4 St. Charles East

Even the officials like what they’re seeing from Geneva, despite the fact that the Vikings still have a losing record.
“One of the refs said to me (on Tuesday, a 2-1 loss against St. Charles East), ‘I keep hearing that Geneva is down this year. I’ve now refereed two of your games and you have played so well, you don’t look down to me,’” Geneva coach Megan Owens said. “So we’re doing what we need to do. The scoreboard doesn’t always reflect it, but that’s sports. The kids are fighting hard, they’re working through it, and I can’t ask for anymore out of them. I’m very proud of them and their effort.”
Geneva (7-9-2) will celebrate Senior Night on Thursday when it welcomes Rosary to Burgess Stadium.
The teams were originally set to play in April, but a combination of factors resulted in the game being reset for May 7.
“We’ve played them every year and this year we just got pushed back,” Owens said. “I think we had ACT weekend and a home track meet so we moved it. It’ll be Senior Night and we’ve got seven seniors this year so it should be a fun time.”
The seven seniors are: Megan Albrecht, Megan Fitz, Caitlin Harkleroad, Mary Landry, Riley Sanders, Quincy Swanson and Megan Newingham. Landry came up big in Tuesday’s loss. She put the Vikings ahead 1-0 early in the second half. After the Saints netted the equalizer, Landry nearly answered but her shot clanked right off the right post.
“We’re hitting our stride at the right time and creating offensively even against the best teams in the state,” Owens said. “I like that we’re getting our chances, and it’s great to see what they’re doing defensively. They marked up really well (against St. Charles East) and really frustrated them so there were a lot of positives.”
It’s really difficult to determine what Rosary team will show up in Geneva on Thursday.
The Royals are coming off a 2-0 loss to St. Francis on Tuesday and are now 6-6-1.
“The majority of our losses have come when we were short-handed during spring break or not 100 percent,” Rosary coach Brian Frank said. “We’re playing much better now.”
The Royals have relied heavily on their eight seniors and an interesting schedule due to not having a conference. It resulted in them facing Montini and St. Francis three times.
“We’ve always played Geneva, and they’re always tough and very talented,” Frank said. “It’s a big school and a nice indicator as we head into the playoffs. It’s a very good challenge for us.”
Quincy Kellett and Maria Witte have been a nice tandem for the Royals and stopping them will be key to Geneva’s success.
Geneva won last year's game in Aurora, 4-1.
