Class 3A Glenbrook N. Sectional preview
(2) Evanston vs. (1) New Trier, 7:15 at NT Northfield Campus
By Curt Herron
New Trier has certainly positioned itself well for today's sectional final by going 14-0-1 during its last 15 matches and only allowing three goals during that span. The Trevians are on a seven-game winning and shutout streak.
But in order for coach Jim Burnside's Trevians to capture a seventh-straight sectional title, and set up the chance to claim their seventh-consecutive trophy and 13th of his 24-year career, they must overcome the teams who aim to thwart them.
And one of those sides is Evanston, THE longtime archrival of New Trier in many sports. The hungry Wildkits haven't won a soccer sectional since 2002, the year that they claimed a state championship in their only finals appearance.
After falling 2-0 in the team's first meeting on May 5, the Wildkits played the Trevians to a 2-2 draw on May 19 and hope that they can improve upon that outcome when the teams meet for a third time tonight.
The winner of the match advances to Tuesday's Glenbrook North Supersectional against the winner of tonight's Warren Sectional final between (1) Libertyville and (3) Stevenson. The 19-1-4 Trevians suffered their lone loss when they fell 1-0 to Libertyville on May 1; the game was New Trier's fourth in a five-day stretch.
"We are excited for a great game between two quality teams and great rivals," Burnside said.
The Trevians are led in goals by seniors Morgan Fagan (10 goals, 12 assists) and Caroline Finnigan (10, 6). Senior Kate Dobsch (7, 1) and junior Elizabeth Marquardt (6, 2) are prime contributors.
Senior goalkeeper Wynne Hague has only allowed six goals in 21 matches and has recorded 16 shutouts.
Evanston earned its spot in the title match with a 1-0 semifinal win over Loyola, while the Trevians advanced with a 1-0 victory over Glenbrook North.
