Deerfield hopes to regain momentum
By Rusty Silber
Deerfield will look to return to the form that allowed the Warriors to enjoy a recent three-game win streak when it hosts Grayslake North tonight at 6:30.
Deerfield (5-8-1) had hoped it had turned its season around with league wins against Highland Park (4-2) and Maine East (4-0), and nonconference foe Stevenson (2-0). But eighth-ranked Glenbrook North proved Deerfield had more work to do with a 7-0 win in a game between then unbeaten Central Suburban League North Division foes.
Grayslake North, of the Northern Lake County Conference, has battled to a 7-9-0 record this season.
If a common opponents are any indication, the game could be a well-matched affair. Deerfield lost 2-0 in a nonconference batle with Lakes (10-4-0) Saturday. Grayslake North lost to those same Eagles 3-0 in a conference meeting on Sept. 7. Deerfield lost 5-2 in the early season to currently 19th-ranked Carmel. Grayslake North fell to the Corsairs 3-1 Sept. 20.
Deerfield ended a two-game losing streak when it played conference foe Vernon Hills to a 3-3 draw Tuesday in a back-and-forth game.
Grayslake North posted its biggest win of the season with a 5-0 victory over Grant on Tuesday to snap a five-game losing streak. It was the second time the Knights posted a shutout win over the Bulldogs this season.
The visitors lost a 2-1 heated home battle with Niles North on Saturday afternoon.
"We've been playing some good soccer," Grayslake North soccer coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Unfortunately, we have struggled to find the needed touch to finish many of our opportunities."
The Knights, who have endured three PK shootout losses this seasons, lost 14 players from the 2016 roster.
Grayslake North suffered one-sided losses to Warren, Prairie Ridge and Mundelein this season.
"Many of our losses were to top teams in which we gave away too much space and paid the price," DeCaluwe said. "The returning players we have are quality kids, and they have worked hard to lead the team. We have lacked confidence at times and struggled for results, especially in the tight games."
