Marmion rolls into CCL opener vs. Loyola
Cadets host Rambers in Blue Division tilt Thursday
By Chris Walker
Opponents have marked Marmion senior James Serrano. They’ve even double-teamed him and triple-teamed him.
Opposing coaches and defenders probably have had nightmares about him.
They might want to start thinking about his teammates too. That “they” would include Loyola which visits Marmion on Thursday in Aurora.
Serrano and coach Jimmy Romano did not participate in Marmion’s Chicago Catholic League Blue Division opener on Tuesday, but the Cadets still defeated Brother Rice 3-2 for their fourth-consecutive victory.
As has been the case much this fall, different players are stepping up each night and contributing to the team’s success. While Serrano might be the team’s star, the roster is full of talented players.
“Honestly, we have a new ‘Player of the Game’ every single game,” Romano said. “It’s easy to say that James is our MVP so far this year with 11 goals and 7 assists, and he’s even more then the stats with his leadership. But even (Tuesday) without him, guys stepped up. It hasn’t been one guy this year that has stood out. Every game someone else is stepping up.”
Loyola (4-1-3, 2-0-0) was supposed to play Fenwick on Tuesday but that game was postponed and rescheduled for Oct. 9 because Fenwick had another game obligation in the PepsiCo tournament.
The Ramblers are unbeaten this month and coming off of back-to-back shutouts against De La Salle and Montini.
Romano does not have as much intel on this upcoming foe than he would like.
“I tried finding something on them,” Romano said. “We lost to them by a goal last year so it was a close game. Typically they do pretty well, and I know they’ve had some close games (against Buffalo Grove, Waukegan, Glenbrook North and New Trier). It should be a good test and a tough game, and he (Loyola coach Baer Fisher) may know more about us than we do them.”
Marmion (6-3-0) has already won more games than a year ago (5) and now will get its start in conference.
“Last year we were a very young team and inexperienced at the varsity level,” Romano said. “Bringing back about 18 guys definitely helps and last year was growing pains and lack of experience so there were many one-goal losses. It’s been growth in getting better and commitment in the offseason during summer workouts and camp. It’s a combination of those things, helping us get these results, and we hope to keep going.”
