North meets South in Plainfield duel
By Chris Walker
Two teams with directions in their respective names, who have started out in different directions this season, will go head-to-head Thursday evening at Plainfield North.
The host Tigers (5-1-0, 5-1-0) will greet Plainfield South (0-3-2, 0-3-2) at 4:30 p.m. for a Southwest Prairie Conference game. The game time was moved up from 6 p.m. due to the weather.
Plainfield North has enjoyed an edge over Plainfield South with a 4-1-0 record in the past five meetings. The games have been rivalry close with the last three decided by a goal, including last year’s scoreless draw which needed PKs to determine a winner. In fact, only three goals total have been scored in the past three years when the teams have gone head-to-head. Plainfield South's last win was a 1-0 decision in 2017.
The Cougars started the season with a 1-1 tie at Joliet Central before losses to Romeoville and Plainfield Central. After rallying to earn a 2-2 tie against Oswego East on Monday, Plainfield South struggled mightily in an 8-2 loss to Plainfield East. Meanwhile, the Wolves team that the Cougars tied subsequently lost decisively to Plainfield North 5-0.
Either the Plainfield South offense will need to step things up after scoring just five goals so far this season, or the defense (21 goals allowed) will need to batten down the hatches, or both, to find success against Plainfield North.
The Tigers sailed along early with four opening wins against Minooka, Joliet Central, Romeoville and Plainfield Central and a 21-3 aggregate goal count. That run stopped abruptly in a 6-1 loss to conference powerhouse Oswego on March 20.
All told Plainfield North has outscored its opponents 27-9.
