Class AA Wauconda Sectional preview
(3) Deerfield vs. (1) Saint Viator, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
at Forest View Educational Center, Arlington Heights
By Curt Herron
Coach Rich Grady says that the success that 15-7-2 Warriors have had this season is based on their strong attack.
Offensive leaders are junior forward Holly Deutsch (17 goals, 23 assists), junior forward Riley Schimanski (20 goals, 7 assists), freshman midfielder Emily Fox (17 goals and 9 assists) and junior midfielder Ally Linn (2 goals, 12 assists).
Freshman goalie Lauren Gottlieb now has two playoff wins after joining the varsity club. She recorded 13 shutouts on the JV squad. Junior Katie Morgan anchors the defense along with senior Andrea Balestra, freshman Madeline Stevens and freshman Avery Kingsepp. Deerfield has recorded nine shutouts this season.
The Warriors compete in a sectional final for the first time since 2016, when they made the school's only state tournament appearance. Deerfield finished second behind Rochester.
Saint Viator (11-4-1) is the sentimental choice with coach Mike Taylor retiring. The Lions hope to make their second state trip in the last three seasons. They took second place in AA in 2018 after falling to St. Francis.
The winner advances to the Wauconda Supersectional to meet either (1) Freeport or (1) Burlington Central.
