Class A state tournament championship
Wheaton Academy 2, Althoff 1
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes and then held on for the second state title in school history. Twins Josh Mariotti and Caleb Mariotti gave Wheaton Academy (19-4-1) all the offense it needed. Josh Mariotti connected off a Gio Nicoski cross in the middle of the box in the second minute. Ten minutes later Robert Platt delivered a cross to Caleb Mariotti for what turned out to be the game-winner. The Warriors finished the championship campaign on a 12-game win streak. For the season the team scored 85 goals, produced 55 assists and recorded nine shutouts and 1.25 GAA. The Warriors previously won the Class AA championship in 2014.
Class AA state tournament
Vernon Hills Sectional
Grayslake Central 2, Crystal Lake South 0
The top-seeded Gators (18-4-2) saw their string of consecutive Final Four appearances end at two. No 3-seed Grayslake Central used a goal in each half and stopped seven Crystal Lake South shots to take the win. "I'm so proud of this group and all they were able to accomplish this season," said Gators coach Brian Allen. "The seniors maintained a high standard of play and work-rate to help lead this team back to this game for the third time in as many tries. While it was not the ending we were hoping for, they played hard until the final whistle, and that's all I can ask for as a coach. They've continued to add to the tradition and culture left by previous seniors before them and added their own legacy to our program. I will be forever grateful to those seven seniors and what they've given to our program, and to the entire team for giving it all they had each time they stepped onto the pitch this season."
