Glenbrook South 2, Niles North 0
After more than a half of scoreless soccer, the Titans took control on goals from Stefan Souleles (assisted by Victor Matraszek) in the 48th minute and Josh Nelson (assisted by Dominik Danko) in the 70th. Keeper Colin Morse recorded the shutout. Glenbrook South is ranked 38th in Chicagoland Soccer's First 50 preseason poll.
Warren 1, Grayslake Central 0
A goal from Sebastian Rodriguez in the 24th minute, assisted by Miguel Rodriguez, was all the no. 6 Blue Devils needed for the win. Keeper George McAtee earned the shutout.
"It was great to get back on the soccer pitch and playing games again at the high school level," said Warren coach Jason Ahonen. "I think both teams had some jitters to start off as the game started relatively slow. Our defense played extremely well limiting the chances for Grayslake Central. A number of players made their varsity debut and some even got their first varsity start today. I could not be prouder of the effort that I saw from the boys."
West Chicago 1, Wheaton Academy 0
The host Warriors surrendered a 60th-minute goal to fall to the second-ranked and defending Class 3A champion. Wheaton Academy goalkeeper Declan Finnegan made seven saves, including a huge double-save in the opening half, in his first varsity start. The game saw a few chances for each side in the opening 40 minutes; and play was a physical battle in the middle third of the field. The sequence for the winning goal began when a cross was pinballed in the penalty area. Wheaton Academy closes out its first week of action with home games against Aurora Central
on Thursday and Geneva on Saturday.
