Class AA regional championships
At Grayslake North
Deerfield 1, Grayslake North 0
The Warriors headed into the final at Grayslake North against the home team knowing full well what to expect. It was the third meeting of the year between the two squads, and each game has been a physical, tightly contested battle. Friday night was no exception, but Deerfield squeaked by for its third win over the Knights. The Warriors applied early pressure, but a string of good saves from Grayslake North senior goalkeeper Emily Dunne kept the game scoreless. In particular, Dunne stuck out a left hand to deny a point blank effort by Marissa Hyland in the 6th minute. Dunne also smothered a header from Mallory Sawyer off a corner kick. Holly and Greef Deutsch entered the game as subs for the Warriors and made an immediate impact. Greer made a diagonal pass into the penalty area for her sister, but Holly was knocked down from behind by a Knights defender, and the referee pointed to the spot. Malori Killoren calmly converted for her 17th goal of the year in only 13 games played. At the other end of the field, sophomore Gabi Sipe was not tested frequently, but she was up to the challenge, recording three saves, including a diving effort late in the first half. The Warriors continued to generate chances in the second half, but could not get another one past Dunne. Holly Deutsch rang a shot off the crossbar, and Riley Schimanski saw her effort from 12 yards palmed away by the diving Dunne. The Warrior midfield of Sawyer, Shayna Wood, Killoren, and Emma Gassman won a majority of the 50/50 balls throughout the match. Defenders Sydney Burns, Katie Morgan, Megan David, and Emma Pelz consistently won headers and denied through-balls to keep things under control. With the victory, the Warriors captured their second-consecutive regional title and sxith in the last eight years. Fourth-seeded Deerfield (13-11-2) meets top-seeded and 16th-ranked Wauconda at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in an Antioch Sectional semifinal.
