Class 3A
Barrington Supersectional
Barrington 4, Hononegah 1
Barrington beat Hononegah and a bad memory Tuesday evening. The Fillies bested their guests 4-1 to reach the Final Four for the third time in five years and help ease the sting of a supersectional loss to Huntley last year.
The hosts were tactically superior, but Hononegah (13-10-0) was a quality and worthy supersectional opponent.
Coach Ryan Stengren, who posted his 200th-career victory in the match, was pleased with the result.
"We didn't play our best 80 minutes of soccer of the season, but we advanced, and at this time of the season, that's first and foremost," said the Fillies manager, whose club was well aware of outside forces which were weighing heavily on each and every player.
"There was so much coming into this game," began Kayla Keck, one-fourth of the Fillies magnificent back four.
"We all knew a win tonight would be the 200th in Stengren's career, then we were dealing with our loss last year in this game to Huntley, plus we were playing before a huge crowd," she said.
"On one hand it was great motivation, but on the other there was a lot of pressure."
The match itself was not beautiful, but Barrington (26-1-0) came through in the one area it focused on -- finding an early goal to help set the tone. That was secured in impressive fashion when Anna Brodjian scored in the first minute. It helped ease some of the fears of a repeat of last year.
"That first goal was big for us, but it almost came too easy. And I felt like it might have affected how we played afterwards for awhile," said Fillies keeper Samantha Schmitz.
Sydney Bowling added another on the scoreboard at Barrington Community Stadium, but that was followed by a rare defensive lapse in the midfield that allowed Hononegah's Julia Barenbaum goal. That produced several nervous moments for the Fillies faithful.
Barrington pressed Hononegah aggressively after conceding its first goal in the playoffs, and the strategy paid dividends when Sophia Spinell's wicked left-footed cracker regained the two-goal advantage at the half hour.
The first 15 minutes of the second period saw the Fillies put their guests under as they finally began to build the attack from the back as they had all season long. Ellie Stodola added a second half goal that ended any remaining fears.
Barrington advances into the last four of the 3A state tournament for the seventh time in program history, and third under Stengren. The Fillies ended the last two trips with wins in the third place game.
"I'm thrilled for the girls, and very proud of all of them for what they have achieved thus far, which has all come through hard work from each player," said Stengren.
"There's still some unfinished business we have to attend to, but our focus is only on Downers Grove North - our first game of the tournament on Friday night."
