Chicago Public League playoffs
Quarterfinals
Payton 2, Northside 0
Payton punched its ticket to the city semifinals with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over an inspired Northside team. Payton broke through when Haley Owens’ perfectly placed corner service found freshman Olivia Moore, who finished with a bullet header into the side netting. Moore completed her memorable day by completing a brace from just inside the box with 12 minutes remaining. Northside, behind the effort of seniors Arly Escamilla, Kelsey Tsonton and Megan Sobolewski, had kept the game scoreless for the first 55 minutes. The Mustangs' talented forward Rebecca Skipper had several looks to equalize but was defended brilliantly by Payton standouts Maddie Clerkin and Mimi Hamada. Ultimately the Grizzlies backline defense, coupled with the dominant play of midfielder Fiona O’Brien and four timely saves by goalkeeper Hannah Lynn, kept Northside off the scoreboard. Payton will face Young in the CPL tournament semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks High School.
