After watching Elgin play in the postseason a year ago, York coach Jordan Stopka was impressed. After battling the Maroons to a scoreless tie Tuesday, he was even more impressed. “We saw them in that sectional against Huntley,” he said. “They’re a very talented team. They’re smart. They play the ball quick. I really think this is one of the better teams we’ve seen.” The Dukes (6-0-2), who jumped to the top of the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 this week, missed a PK late in the first half and then a rebound opportunity. “We’re a mid-level team right now for where we can be, and we’re still beating good teams,” York senior Ryder Kohl said. “So it shows our potential and how good we can be." The Maroons (5-0-3) are ranked no. 14. Elgin has been one of the fastest rising teams in the state these past two years. While they challenged the York defense at times, the Dukes proved up to the task with goalkeeper Diego Ochoa denying anything that came his way. Elgin goalkeeper Kleber Rodriguez came up with strong saves to maintain his clean-sheet. The teams are tied for the lead in the pool.
