Roundup (Tuesday, September 25)
Central Suburban League
North Division
Deerfield 2, Maine West 1
After falling behind on a superb Jason Ybarra strike in the first half, Deerfield came out on fire in the second half to score twice and take the victory. After Maine West's 22nd-minute goal, the Warriors Tim Frenkel did a great job shutting down Ybarra. Ryan Grady made an excellent diving save in the final minute of the half to keep the margin at one. In the second half, Nicolas Compisi made several superb runs down the left flank and whipped in dangerous crosses, but the Warriors were not able to convert. Finally, with 16 minutes remaining, Eric Kenney drilled a volley from outside the area to knot the game at 1-1. Five minutes later, Adam Odzer outjumped a defender and headed a corner kick from Nicholas Prus into the far corner for the game-winner. Ryan Grady made six saves in the win.
South Division
New Trier 2, Glenbrook South 1
An 80th-minute goal from Logan Weaver gave the Trevians, ranked fifth in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, the thrilling win and an undefeated conference title. Charlie Hoholik tied the game in the 47th minute. Glenbrook South's Jimmy McMahon (Luis Loredo assist) gave his squad the lead in the 32nd minute. The no. 23 Titans finished second in the league.
West Suburban Conference
Gold Division
Addison Trail 4, Leyden 3
The Blazers prevailed to win their seventh-straight game on a brace from Anthony Hernanez and solo tallies from Luis Silva and Julio Acosta. Melvin Mora, Eduardo Gomez and Leo Acosta contributed assists. Leyden led 2-1 at halftime, but Addison Trail (10-4-0, 3-0-0) answered with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Blazers added an insurance goal with 15 minutes. Leyden scored on a PK with 2:30 left on the clock but could not find an equalizer. Goalkeeper Sam Sandoval made eight saves for the winners.
Nonconference
Yorkville 1, Geneseo 0 (canceled after 29 minutes)
Julio Segura gave the Foxes the lead off an assist from Preston Huitron. Unfortunately Mother Nature ended the game before the half. Goalkeeper Brandon Ducoing made two saves. "It was a shame that weather shortened the match," said Yorkville coach Andrew Johnson. "This was our strongest start to a game in a few weeks. Seventeen players had already contributed time on the field and played a vital role in that start. Two starters left with injuries, so a lineup reshuffling may once again take place. The ball was moving well from east to west, and we were able get attacks into their defensive third."
