Roundup (Wednesday, September 27)
East Suburban Catholic Conference
Benet 5, Marist 0
The Redwings (5-6-1, 4-1-0) won their fourth-straight game thanks to a high defensive line and strong midfield pressure that created immediate chances. With 27 minutes left in the first half, senior Jason Rowaiye scored the first goal from a rebound off freshman Chris Mankowski's shot that had been nicely set up by junior Franklin Rutkowski's through-ball. Seven minutes later Rutkowski scored with a header off junior John Mitra's perfect free kick from the right side. The final goal of the half came from a difficult and well-placed top corner shot by senior Nick Trakszelis, assisted by Rutkowski.
In the second half with 22:24 remaining, sophomore Nick Renfro scored after gathering a 50/50 ball and blasting it from the top of the box. The scoring was closed out at 9:32 with a Mankowski header after freshman Hans Heinicke's corner kick. Late in the half, Benet's clean-sheet was threatened on a free kick from just outside of the box by Marist's Pat Clancy, but Brian Gould made an outstanding diving save to preserve the shutout.
With the win, Benet moved in to a tie for third in the ESCC with Carmel. Next up for the Redwings is a league home game at noon Saturday against Notre Dame.
