Team preview: Barrington
By Mike Garofola
Just like a bee is attracted to honey, Tina Teik was drawn to Yale University since she took her first steps on the campus.
"(The) first time we went to visit, I knew immediately it was the obvious choice for me," recounted Teik.
"The campus, the people, players, coaching staff; (there) was that feeling they want you to succeed in whatever endeavor who choose to take."
So strong was the connection, Teik committed to attend to Yale when she was only a freshman at Barrington.
Teik had no idea of the impending rollercoaster ride for coaches that was about to take place at her beloved college home, and it almost dashed her hopes of becoming a student-athlete at the New Haven, Connecticut, campus.
During that time Yale began a revolving door of head coaches when Rudy Meredith was let go as part of a nationwide bribery scandal.
"(That) would be the first of three coaching changes. (It) was a difficult time not knowing how it would all come together," Teik said.
Now things are squared away.
"When I went out there almost a month ago for another official visit with the new staff, everything felt right once again for me, and I could not be happier," said Teik of her recent experience.
"It (Yale) was obviously my first choice and love: the Gothic look of the campus is unbeatable; and it's one of the oldest universities in the United States."
Teik is currently considering a career in engineering or possibly medical school once she completes her undergraduate degree.
"That whole ordeal with Yale was tough on Tina," said Barrington manager Ryan Stengren. "The coaching changes which forced her to decommit, (we) fought hard for her to end up going there. I'm thrilled to see it all end up the way it did
"She is a terrific player and person and just unbelievable in the classroom -- (one) of our best in the school. So Yale will be a great fit for her."
Teik will be the second player under Stengren to play at Yale, following in the shooting boots of Mary Kubiak (2009) who led the Fillies in scoring all four years and collected 84 goals and 25 assists before going on to play in 65 games at Yale.
"(Coach) Stengren was always there for me during those ups-and-downs I was going through, but that's just the way he is," said Teik, who led the Fillies in assists last season with 15 which gave her 28 in her career.
"He cares about all of us, the entire roster, regardless of your playing status, never playing favorites, and he wants to see all of us succeed in soccer, the classroom and in life."
On the prep pitch, Teik was an impact player in the Fillies current run of two-consecutive 3A state championships (2017-18) and second place finish in 2019. She has earned Chicagoland Soccer all-state honors the past two seasons.
While in wait for the hoped for start to the 2020 spring season, Teik has stayed the course with her training. She pays particular attention to her fitness while keeping a positive outlook on things despite what is currently going around all of us.
"It's disappointing to not be able to play right now," she said. "We've all worked so hard in advance of the season, which for many of us is our last here at Barrington.
"But, again, we have each other, and we're all doing our best to keep a positive mindset. Hopefully we'll be back out there playing very soon."
