Team preview: Hersey
By Mike Garofola
Like the rest of us, Chloe Sena does not know what the immediate future will bring. However, the star forward from Hersey certainly knows where she is headed.
After a sparkling season last spring, in which Sena bagged 14 goals on her way to all-MSL, all-sectional honors, the then junior committed to Taylor University (Indiana) where she will continue her career and study for her dream job: becoming a labor and delivery nurse.
"(Taylor) gives me the best of both worlds," Sena began.
"The community (Upland, Ind.) around the campus has a great feel to it, as does the campus. Plus, it's a Christian college, which gives me the faith-based learning environment that is so important to me."
The star forward considered Hope College and Liberty University, among others.
Sena’s breakout season in 2019 for manager Mike Rusniak also earned her a spot on Chicagoland Soccer's 2020 All-State Watch List.
"Chloe is a special talent," Rusniak said. “Her speed, strength and ability to finish her chances have placed her in a good position to be one of the all-time scoring leaders in program history.
"Off the field, she is funny, charismatic, and just a great person to be around.
"Her teammates love her, and look up to her. (But) when she's back on the field, she turns on a switch and becomes a beast with a competitive edge that makes her exciting to watch."
The motivated Sena is instinctive, quick, smart and composed beyond her years, but that doesn’t mean she’s gotten complacent.
"During this past offseason, I worked on my speed (to) become more explosive, my dribbling, fitness and conditioning, and lifting to add more muscle," said Sena.
With the abrupt stoppage due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Sena has continued a regular routine of training in order to stay mentally and physically sharp, if and when the season returns.
"If we stay out (longer) we'll begin our classes online, so I'm staying on top of that, along with my training, as well as keeping in touch with my teammates with fun videos to help keep us all together, and focused."
Sena believes the 2020 version of Hersey soccer is poised to have a successful season, despite the graduation of Chicagoland Soccer All-Stater Laura Burckhardt (who started 12 games at Bryn Mawr College as a freshman). She did many things for a Huskies club that won the MSL East Division crown.
"Laura was so versatile: played up-top, in the middle and along the back whenever we needed her," Sena said.
"(But) we have a very good group of returning players, plus two freshmen, who look like they will be able to step in right away, so I am very excited about how our team will look this spring."
